The Maruleng Municipality is situated in the south-eastern quadrant of the Limpopo Province within the Mopani District Municipal Area of Jurisdiction. The municipal area extends over 324 699ha.
The Maruleng Municipality is bordered by the Kruger National Park to the east, the Ba-Phalaborwa and Tzaneen Municipalities to the north, the Lepelle Nkumpi Municipality to the West, and the Tubatse Municipality and Bushbuckridge Municipality to the south.
The main access points to the municipal area are considered to be Klaserie and the Strijdom Tunnel in the south, Ofcolaco in the west and Mica in the north. The town of Hoedspruit can be considered the administrative and economic centre of the area. It is also the location of the Hoedspruit Air Force Base.

Maruleng municipality is wedged between some of Limpopo prime tourist attractions, including the Kruger National Park, Timbavati Private Reserve and Blyde River Canyon. Significant tourism related activities exist as well as numerous private lodges and guesthouses. Tourist attractions and facilities in Maruleng: There are an estimated 2814 beds in 70 lodges 10 guesthouses and 10 resorts in the municipality. Estimated 70 to 80% of Lowveld luxury lodges.R527 route gives access to Khamai Reptile Park, Bombyx Mori Silk farm and Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation centre. It also houses Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre which is the world famous Cheetah breeding centre and Klaserie dam. The area falls within Limpopo Tourism “Valley of Oliphants” tourism route. Blyde river canon offers Bird watching (globally recognised and important bird area), Adventure tourism including hiking, white water Rafting, abseiling, hot air ballooning. SERVICES
| Water
The Maruleng municipality is characterized by low rainfall. This results in limited water resources culminating in severe water shortages and drought condition. There is stiff competition amongst different water users. water for domestic purpose becomes crucial. Only 9%of the population have access to RDP standard water source. The Municipality also provide free basic water (6000 litres per household per month). |
| Sanitation
Lack of access to basic sanitation services has created massive environmental and health problems. The fact that most villages in the municipality don’t have RDP level sanitation constitutes a major risk in terms of ground water pollution. The main types of sanitary system used in the municipality are water borne sewerage (flush toilets) septic tanks ventilated improved Pit latrines (VIP), French drains and ordinary pit latrines to no basic services at all. |
| Energy and electricity.
Energy distribution has important economic developmental implications with a potential to make considerable impact. This impact relates to improved living conditions, increased productivity and greater sustainability of the environment. In the municipality electricity is largely generated by Eskom. About 8299 households have access to free basic electricity. The municipality has a backlog of about 2500 households of electricity connections. |

| Road infrastructure
Road usage is a reflection of people’s mode of life. The routes, frequency and volume of passengers and goods should basically inform the criteria for the prioritisation of road works i.e. roads for which resources should be committed for regravelling, tarring, lining, signage etc. Maruleng has 48.4km tarred road and 188.7km of gravel roads and its total kilometres of roads is 237.54km. |
